Vector
SVG
Made of lines and shapes, not pixels. Scales to any size with no blur. Small file for a simple logo. Great for websites and print.
SVG stays sharp at any size. PNG is a picture with fixed pixels. Keep both, and know which one goes where.

SVG is a vector file. It stays sharp at any size, from a tab icon to a big sign. PNG is a picture made of pixels. It looks good at the size you saved it and gets blurry when you stretch it.
Use SVG for your website and for anything that must scale. Use PNG for email, social profiles, slides and any place that does not accept SVG. Keep the SVG as the master and export PNG from it.
Both are fine. They do different jobs.

Pixels
A picture with a fixed size. Works almost everywhere, keeps a see-through background. Blurs if you make it bigger than it was saved.

| Where you use it | Use this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your website | SVG | Sharp on every screen, including big and sharp displays. |
| Email signature | PNG | Many email programs do not show SVG. Save PNG at twice the display size. |
| LinkedIn and other social profiles | PNG | Upload forms usually want a picture. See logo for social profile pictures. |
| Slides and documents | PNG, or SVG if the app takes it | Check the app. PNG is the safe choice for a deck you send out. |
| Print, signs, merch | SVG or PDF | Printers need a vector file so edges stay clean at any size. |
| Tab icon (favicon) | PNG or SVG | Small and simple. See favicon from logo. |
| Sending to a partner | A pack: SVG plus PNG | One folder, clear names. See how to share logo files. |
One note. A very detailed logo with soft gradients can make a heavy SVG. If it loads slowly, ask your designer for a lighter version.

Upload your logo and see the clear space it needs. A good logo file helps most when people leave room around it. It is free and runs right here.
Most blurry logos are a small PNG that someone stretched. Do this instead.
Step 1
Look at the box where the logo will sit. Say it shows at 200 px wide.
Step 2
Save a 400 px wide PNG. It stays sharp on sharp screens.
Step 3
Choose a see-through background, not white. Then it works on light and dark pages.
Step 4
Do not recolour by hand. Ask for a white logo and a dark logo from the master.
Step 5
For example: company-logo-dark.png, company-logo-white.png, company-logo.svg.
Step 6
If you need bigger, go back to the SVG and export again.
Never stretch is the oldest rule of logo use. See more mistakes in logo misuse examples.

Smallest size is a real question. I answer it in logo minimum size for web and print.
The real cost of a logo file is the waiting.
In many teams, someone asks for the logo every week. A designer answers. The file is the wrong one. They ask again. That is a lot of waiting for a PNG.
In a Brand OS Portal, the team picks a background and a size and gets the right logo. Colour, light, dark, white or black. For tab icon, profile, slide or big sign. The files include SVG, PNG and PDF in the full demo.
A designer is still the right person for a new logo or a new identity. The portal is for the daily work after that. See Brand OS Portal or what a brand portal is.

This is a real tool from a real Brand OS Portal, on the MTG brand. Pick a background and a size. The portal gives you the right logo, and a logo that breaks a rule fixes itself.

SVG is better as a master because it scales with no blur. PNG is better in places that do not accept SVG, like many email programs and upload forms.
Not by simply renaming it. A PNG is pixels. To get a true SVG, the logo has to be redrawn as shapes, ideally by the person who made it. Read which logo files you need.
SVG for the logo in the header and footer. Use PNG for the social share image and where a tool asks for a picture.
Export it at twice the size it shows on screen. A logo shown at 200 px wide should be saved at 400 px wide.
A vector file, such as SVG or PDF, so the edges stay clean at any size.
