Logo design on Upwork: what to expect and how to judge a portfolio.

Two ways to buy a logo on Upwork, what you should get at the end, and a 10-point portfolio check.

On Upwork you can buy a ready-made logo project from the Project Catalog or post a job and pick from proposals. Catalog projects are quick to start. A job post is better when the logo needs to fit a real market and grow into a brand.

Judge a logo designer by their logos at small size, in one colour and on real products, not by mockups. You should get vector files, colour versions and short usage rules at the end.

What a good logo project delivers.

Ask for this list before you start. A logo is more than one PNG.

  • Vector files: SVG, AI or EPS, and PDF
  • Colour versions: full colour, one colour, black, white
  • Layouts: horizontal, stacked and the symbol alone, if there is one
  • Small sizes: a favicon and an app icon that still read
  • Colour codes: HEX, RGB, and CMYK for print
  • Short rules: clear space, smallest size, what not to do
  • Rights: written in the contract, transferred to you
  • Source files: if you agreed on them

The full list with file types is in logo files: what you need. The rules part is in logo usage guidelines.

How to judge a logo portfolio in 10 minutes.

Open three logo projects. Check each one against this list. Your ticks stay on this device.

Six or fewer ticks? Look further. A quick trick: run a reverse image search on a logo you like. If it shows up under other names, move on.

How long logo design takes on Upwork.

A simple catalog logo can be fast. A logo that has to fit your market takes longer, because the designer needs to learn about your buyers and competitors first.

With me, a logo and its system take about 7-14 days, and full branding about 14-21 days. See how long branding takes for what drives the time.

Be careful with promises of a final logo in one day. Fast is fine for sketches. The final logo needs testing at small size and on real products.

A finished logo comes with versions for every background and size.

Red flags in logo proposals.

  • Final files only as PNG or JPG
  • Dozens of logo options for a tiny budget: often templates
  • Mockups only, no logo shown small or in one colour
  • No questions about your name, buyers or competitors
  • Unclear who owns the logo at the end
  • Logos in the portfolio that look like famous brands

Straight answers.

Is Upwork good for logo design?

Yes, if you check the portfolio well. Look for logos shown small, in one colour and on real products, and read what clients wrote in their reviews.

What is the Upwork Project Catalog?

A part of Upwork where freelancers sell pre-scoped projects with a set scope, timeline and deliverables. You can buy a logo project there without posting a job.

What files should I get from a logo designer?

Vector files (SVG, AI or EPS, PDF), colour and one-colour versions, layouts, small icons, colour codes and short usage rules. See logo files.

Who owns the logo made on Upwork?

It should be you, once the work is paid. Read Upwork's terms and your contract, and ask the designer to confirm it in writing.

How many logo concepts should I expect?

Two or three strong directions are better than twenty weak ones. Ask how many directions you see, and how many rounds of changes are included.

Can I hire you for a logo outside Upwork?

Yes. See logo design or book a 15-minute call.
