How to hire a brand designer on Upwork.

How to judge a brand portfolio.
A logo alone tells you little. Look for the system around it.
- The logo shown small, on dark, and on real products
- Colours, type and patterns, not only the logo
- Guidelines pages, not only pretty mockups
- Work for companies like yours
- A short story: the problem, the idea, the result
- Real client names you can look up

Eight questions to ask before you hire.
Interview questions for a brand designer
1. Which project in your portfolio is closest to ours, and why? 2. What do you need from us before you start? 3. How many design directions do we see, and when? 4. How many rounds of changes are included? 5. Who does the work: you, or a team? 6. What files do we get at the end, and in whose name are the accounts? 7. Do you write brand guidelines, and what is in them? 8. What happens if the first direction is not right?
Good answers are short and specific. Vague answers to questions 5, 6 and 8 are a warning sign.
Red flags to watch for.
- A portfolio of mockups with no real client names
- Many logos that look like famous brands
- Final files only as PNG or JPG
- No questions about your buyers or competitors
- A proposal pasted with someone else's company name
- Pressure to start before the scope is clear
