Brand OS Portal

What are brand assets? The full list, with examples.

Brand assets are everything people can see, hear or read that tells them it is you, even without your name.

Brand assets are the parts of your brand people know you by: the logo, name, colours, fonts, patterns, photos, icons, voice, tagline and templates.

The strongest ones are distinctive: people link them to you and only you. A good list of brand assets says what each one is, where the file lives and how to use it.

What makes a brand asset distinctive.

A distinctive brand asset makes people think of you, even when the name is not there.

Test 1

Do people link it to you?

Show the colour or shape without your name. Do customers name you?

Test 2

Is it only yours?

If every company in your field uses blue and a globe, it is not distinctive.

Test 3

Do you use it every time?

An asset gets stronger only when you use it the same way, for years.

Many tech brands share the same look. I wrote about why in why AI startups look the same.

Motion is a brand asset too. Same moves, every post.

Brand assets vs brand identity vs brand guidelines.

Three words that get mixed up.

What it isExample
Brand identityThe whole look and feel of the brandYour logo, colours and type working as one system
Brand assetsThe single parts of that identity, as files and ruleslogo-white.svg, colour codes, the pattern
Brand guidelinesThe rules for using the assetsClear space, colour pairs, voice do and do not

More on the system in visual identity system, and on the rules in what to include in brand guidelines.

MISSING: [list the "no" rows - this is your to-do list]

The "no" rows are your plan. A brand audit helps you decide which to fix first.

Brand assets only work when people can use them.

A great pattern in a folder nobody opens does nothing.

Straight answers.

What are brand assets?

The parts of your brand people know you by: name, logo, colours, fonts, patterns, photos, icons, voice, tagline, motion, sound and templates.

What are examples of brand assets?

A logo, a colour palette, a font, a pattern grown from the logo, a photo style, a tagline and a set of post templates.

What are distinctive brand assets?

Brand assets people link to you and only you, even without your name. They get stronger when you use them the same way for years.

Is a logo a brand asset?

Yes, the most used one. But a logo alone is weak. Colours, type, patterns and voice make the brand easy to spot.

What is the difference between brand assets and brand guidelines?

Brand assets are the parts, as files. Brand guidelines are the rules for using them.
