Logo animation for your website: where it helps and how to do it.

A good logo animation is short, quiet and fast to load. Here is where to use it and where to skip it.

Use logo animation in small places: a short reveal on first load, a hover on the header logo, or a loader. Keep it under 2 seconds and never make people wait for it.

Use a light vector file like SVG or Lottie, or a short muted video. Respect the "reduce motion" setting. Below are six ideas, the formats, the rules and a brief to send a designer.

Six logo animation ideas for a website.

From quiet to bold. Most B2B sites need the quiet ones.

Quiet

Header hover

The symbol turns or shifts a little when the mouse is on it.

Quiet

Draw-on

The lines of the logo draw themselves once, on first load.

Quiet

Loader

The symbol pulses while a slow part of the page loads.

Medium

Build

The parts of the logo slide together from their shapes.

Medium

Hero mark

A big version of the symbol moves slowly behind the headline.

Bold

3D logo

The mark turns in 3D as you scroll. Best for product launches.

Bold motion needs a fast site under it. See 3D website examples and my 3D websites service.

Which file format to use.

Pick the lightest file that does the job.

FormatGood forWatch out for
SVG with CSSHover, draw-on, simple movesComplex motion gets hard to build

MP4 or WebM videoRich motion, 3D, texturesBigger file, use muted and short

Five rules for logo motion on a website.

Motion should feel like your brand, not like a template.

1. Keep it short. Under 2 seconds for a reveal, under half a second for a hover.

2. Never block the page. People must be able to read and click while it runs. A logo that makes them wait loses them.

3. Respect "reduce motion". Some people turn motion off in their device settings. Your site can read that and show the still logo.

4. Do not loop forever. Moving content that runs more than 5 seconds next to other content needs a way to pause or stop it. That is a basic accessibility rule (WCAG 2.2.2, Level A).

5. Move like the brand. A calm brand moves slow and smooth. A sharp brand moves fast and clean. Write this down in your rules.

Motion rules belong in your brand rules, next to the logo usage guidelines. See what brand guidelines include.

Straight answers.

Should my website have a logo animation?

Only if it is short and does not slow the site. A small reveal or hover adds life. A long intro makes people leave.

How long should a logo animation be?

Under 2 seconds for a reveal and under half a second for a hover.

What is the best format for a logo animation on a website?

SVG with CSS for simple moves, Lottie for smooth vector motion, and a short muted MP4 or WebM for rich motion.

Is a GIF logo good for a website?

Usually not. GIFs are heavy and blurry. Use SVG, Lottie or video instead.

Can AI make a logo animation?

AI video tools can make rough ideas. For the final file, you want clean vector motion that matches your brand rules.
