AI brand name generator: a prompt to copy and a naming checklist.

AI gives you 100 names in a minute. Picking one you can own is the hard part. This page helps.

An AI brand name generator gives you many name ideas fast. You can use a ready-made tool, or ChatGPT or Claude with the prompt below, which knows your brand and gives more useful names.

AI cannot tell you if a name is free to use. So check every name on your shortlist: trademark, domain, meaning in other languages, and how it sounds when you say it out loud.

Three ways to generate brand names with AI.

All three are fine for ideas. They differ in how much they know about you.

What it doesGood forWatch out
NamelixMakes short, brandable names with AIFast lists of invented namesIt does not know your buyers or market
Shopify Business Name GeneratorMakes AI name ideas and checks domain availabilityNames with a free domainBuilt for shops, so ideas lean to retail
ChatGPT or Claude with your promptMakes names from your own brand factsNames that fit your positionYou still check trademarks and domains yourself

Checked on 4 November 2026 on each company's own site.

My view: use a generator for volume, and a chat tool with your brand facts for fit. Want more prompts? See ChatGPT prompts for branding.

Copy this brand name generator prompt.

Paste it into ChatGPT or Claude. Fill the brackets. Run it three times and keep the best names.

AI brand name generator prompt
You are a naming expert. Help me name [a company / a product].

About us:
- What we do: [one sentence]
- Who we sell to: [role, company type, countries]
- How we want to feel: [3 words, e.g. calm, sharp, honest]
- Competitor names: [names]
- Names we already dislike, and why: [names]

Give me 30 names in 6 groups of 5:
1. Real words used in a new way
2. Invented words that are easy to say
3. Two words joined into one
4. Short names (5 letters or fewer)
5. Names from a picture or a metaphor
6. Plain names that say what we do

For each name: one line on the meaning, and one risk.
Rules: easy to spell after hearing it once, no hyphens, no numbers,
does not sound like a competitor, no bad meaning in [languages].
Then pick your top 5 and say why.

Run it again with "make them shorter" or "make them warmer". Small changes give a new list.

Six kinds of brand names.

Know the kind you want before you judge single names.

Kind 1

Plain

Says what you do. Easy to understand, hard to protect and hard to stand out.

Kind 2

Real word, new place

A known word used in a new field. Easy to remember, often taken as a domain.

Kind 3

Invented

A new word. Easy to protect and to find, but you must teach people what it means.

Kind 4

Joined words

Two short words in one. Clear and flexible, can feel common in tech.

Kind 5

Picture or metaphor

A name that brings an image to mind. Strong feeling, needs a good story.

Kind 6

Letters or founder

Initials or a person's name. Simple, but says little on its own.

Free tool

A name follows the position.

Before you fall for a name, check the line that says what you do. Paste it and see it next to your competitors. It is free and runs right here.

Score each name from 1 to 3 on each line. Keep the five with the highest total.

AI tools can say a name is "available". They cannot know that. Only official trademark offices and a lawyer can.

After you pick the name.

A name is the start. These are the next three jobs.

Next 1

Lock it down

Register the domain and handles the same day. File the trademark.

Straight answers.

Is there a free AI brand name generator?

Yes. Namelix and the Shopify Business Name Generator are free to use. ChatGPT and Claude also work well with the prompt on this page.

Can I use a name an AI generator gives me?

Maybe. The AI does not check trademarks. Search the trademark offices in your markets and ask a lawyer before you use it.

How do I check if a brand name is taken?

Search trademark databases in your markets, search Google and LinkedIn for the name in your field, and check the domain and social handles.

Should a tech brand use an invented word?

It can work well. Invented words are easier to protect and to find, but you need to teach people what they mean.

How long should a brand name be?

Short enough to say in one breath and spell after hearing it once. Two or three syllables is a good goal.

Can AI design the logo for my new name too?

It can give rough ideas. The final logo should be drawn and tested by a person. See ChatGPT prompts for logo design.
