Rule 1
A real customer
Each mission names who it helps: repair teams, in-house lawyers, small clinics. Not "businesses" or "everyone".
Eight made-up tech companies, sixteen clear statements, and a formula you can fill in today.
A mission statement says what you do every day, for whom, and why it matters. A vision statement says what the world looks like if you win. Keep each one to a single sentence.
Below are 16 examples for made-up tech companies in SaaS, AI, cybersecurity, fintech and more, plus a fill-in formula, a copy template and a check to test your own lines.
They are two different jobs. Mixing them is the most common mistake.
| Mission statement | Vision statement | |
|---|---|---|
| Answers | What do we do, for whom, and why? | Where are we going? |
| Time | Today | 5-10 years from now |
| Tone | Concrete and practical | Big but believable |
| Length | One sentence, under 25 words | One sentence, under 15 words |
| Used in | Sales decks, About page, hiring | Strategy, investor decks, culture |
Your mission and vision sit on top of your positioning. If the positioning is fuzzy, these lines will be fuzzy too.
Fill in the brackets. Then cut every word you do not need.
Mission: We help [who] [do what] so they can [result that matters], by [how you are different]. Vision: A world where [the problem you solve] is [gone / easy / normal]. Test each line: - Would a customer understand it in 5 seconds? - Could a competitor say the same sentence? If yes, rewrite it. - Is every word true today (mission) or believable (vision)?

Rule 1
Each mission names who it helps: repair teams, in-house lawyers, small clinics. Not "businesses" or "everyone".
Rule 2
"No technician drives to the wrong address." You can picture it. "Empowering innovation" you cannot.
Rule 3
The visions are under 10 words. They are easy to repeat in a meeting or on a slide.
The same rules make a good brand voice: plain words, real proof, nothing a competitor could copy word for word. See more in B2B brand voice examples.
AI tools love these words. If you draft with ChatGPT or Claude, give it a "never say" list first. Read how to make ChatGPT use your brand voice.

This is a real tool from a real Brand OS Portal, on the MTG brand. Type one line. You get an on-brand video post.
The mission says what you do today, for whom and why. The vision says where you are going in the long run. One is the road, the other is the place.
One sentence, ideally under 25 words. If you need two sentences, you are probably mixing the mission with the positioning or the vision.
One that names a real customer, a result they can picture and what makes you different. "We help repair teams plan every job in one app" beats "We empower businesses with innovative solutions".
It helps. A short vision makes hiring, fundraising and saying no to the wrong work easier. Keep it under 15 words.
It can write drafts fast. Give it your customer, your result and your proof first, and a list of words to avoid. Then pick and edit by hand.
On the About page, in the first slide of sales and investor decks, in onboarding and in the brand rules your AI tools use.
